According to a recent survey almost half of the nation's fastest-growing companies have suffered a recent breach in information security, According to the survey, 46 % of the fast-growing companies polled said they had been the victims of a recent security breach. The vast majority, (90%), of these breaches were caused by computer viruses or worms, with some companies under attack from multiple vectors, including unauthorised network access (17 %), denial-of-service (DoS) attacks (13 %), and wireless intrusion (2 %).
Hackers were named as the source of 61 % of the attacks, followed by e-mail at 27 %. Attacks by unauthorised users and employees, former employees, and competitors, however, accounted for more than 1 out of every 10 attacks. Of the companies that admitted to a security breach, 83 % reported at least some financial loss -- ranging from network downtime and lost or damaged customer records to direct financial losses and identity theft. Downtime averaged 1.33 days per employee over the past 12 months.
The survey also revealed that the true cost of being under prepared could be measured in terms of financial loss in 80% of companies surveyed and lost time equivalent of more than an extra days holiday or sick day for each and every employee in a penetrated company,”
